The aesthetics of the classical period, and how these were expressed in music. This includes how it was different from the previous period (the baroque period).
The aesthetics of the Classical period focused on balance and clarity. Composers expressed these ideals through clear melodies and homophonic textures. The classical period was less ornate and focused on simplicity.
How classical-period music is related to the Age of Enlightenment.
The social contexts in which chamber music, symphonic music, and opera would have been performed.
Chamber - Aristocratic salons, homes
Symphonic - Public concert halls, royal courts
Opera - Opera houses and grand public
The different parts of sonata-allegro form in detail, including the likely places the keys would shift to if it begins in a major key, and if it begins in a minor key.
Exposition: establishment of main melodic themes, movement from original key to contrasting key
Development: Composer plays with melodic themes, moves them through the orchestra, and moves through a variety of keys before returning to original key at the very end
Recapitulation: Repeat of the exposition but remaining in the original key throughout
First movement is usually major, Second movement is usually minor, Third movement is usually major again
The main differences between opera buffa (comic opera) and opera seria (dramatic opera) in the classical period. (Note: We will discuss this more in Monday’s class, but it is also covered in the reading assigned for Monday.)
Opera seria tended to be based on mythological or historical characters + they were generally much longer than opera buffa
Opera buffa tended to be based on contemporary characters and situations, and sometimes social and political satire + used spoken dialogue in place of recitative
