Preamble
An introductory and preliminary statement in a document that explains the document's purpose and underlying philosophy.
Philosophy of Values
A necessary understanding of human values such as family closeness (pagkamalapit at pagkakaisa ng pamilya), politeness (pagkamagalang), and gratitude (utang na loob).
Mos maiorum
A Roman value referring to the time-honored principle and military life.
The Middle Way
A Confucian and Buddhist doctrine valuing practical life and avoiding self-denial and self-indulgence; equivalent to 'katamtaman lamang'.
Pagkamaka-Diyos
Love for God; expressed through faith in the almighty, respect for life, order, work, and concern for the family and future generations.
Pagkamaka-tao
Love for Fellowmen; an expression of the real essence of love that strengthens families and is characterized by freedom, peace, truth, and justice.
Pagkamaka-bayan
Love for Country; expressed through unity, equality, respect for the law and government, patriotism, and promotion of the common good.
Pagkamaka-kalikasan
Love for the Environment; involves protecting land, sea, air, plants, and animals while showing respect for the integrity of creation.
Roots of Filipino Character
Factors identified by Licuanan (1988), including home environment, social environment, culture, history, education, religion, economics, politics, mass media, and leadership.
Colonial Mentality
A mindset developed from colonization where Filipinos regard colonial powers as superior and themselves as second-class citizens.
Nationalism
The attitude of members regarding their national identity/culture, and actions taken to achieve or sustain full statehood with complete authority.
Patriotism
Derived from the Greek word 'patris' (fatherland); it refers to the love of and devotion to one's country.
Filipino (original meaning)
Term that originally referred to Spaniards born in the Philippines, rather than the native inhabitants.
Propaganda Movement
A movement from 1872 to 1896 that led to an upsurge of patriotic sentiments and nationalistic ideals in the Philippines.
Personal Development Plan
A guide to help a person determine where they are supposed to be in one, five, or ten years and how to get there.
Value
The worth or importance of a particular thing that serves as a basis for decision-making.
Happiness
The end point of every human action which helps a person identify the things they value the most.
