the process where a body of water becomes overly enriched with nutrients (primarily phosphates and nitrates), leading to excessive growth of plants and algae.

Nitrate

Nitrates (NO₃⁻) are naturally occurring chemical compounds composed of nitrogen and oxygen that serve as a primary nutrient for plant growth.

Hydrothermal vents

Hydrothermal vents are underwater geysers or fissures on the ocean floor that spew geothermally heated, mineral-rich water from deep within the Earth's crust.

Aquifer

an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures, or unconsolidated materials (like gravel, sand, or silt) from which groundwater can be extracted using a water well.

Confined aquifer

Think of a confined aquifer like a giant underground water sandwich.

Instead of bread, this sandwich is squished tightly between two solid layers of heavy clay or rock that water cannot pass through. Because the water is trapped in the middle, it gets tightly squeezed and is kept under intense pressure.

Unconfined aquifer

Think of an unconfined aquifer like a giant, water-logged underground sponge.

Unlike a confined aquifer (which is trapped like a tight water sandwich), an unconfined aquifer has no solid roof. The top of the water is open to the soil above it, meaning rainwater can soak straight down from the grass directly into the aquifer.
