Culture
Customary beliefs, social norms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group. It includes a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterize an institution or an organization.
Cultural Competency
A set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enable them to work effectively in cross cultural situations.
Cultural Self Awareness
Understanding the assumptions and values upon which our own behavioral and worldview rest.
Awareness of Other Cultural Context
Encompasses a wide range of elements, but not limited to ethnicity, race, country of origin, language, culture, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, religion, and spiritual beliefs, socio economic status, and educational achievement.
Understanding Dynamics of the Difference
Important to have a basic understanding and knowledge of the common beliefs, norms, and values held by members of the sociocultural groups represented in your area.
Development of Cultural Knowledge
We must familiarize ourselves with the culture that exists in our area. The changing demographic characteristics of The US invites us and challenges us to be knowledgeable about more people in all potential groups.
Adaptability and Skill Practicing
We need to assess the cultural context of others and make changes and adaptations to their value.
Cultural Humility
To be aware of your own cultural heritage and value the differences of others, become aware of your own values and biases and their impact on others, work to strengthen your comfort levels with other cultures
Diversity
Understanding, respecting, embracing, preserving, and celebrating experiences and perspectives that differ from our own.
Cultural Responsiveness
To learn, relate, respect, and act in dignity. Refers to the ability to learn from and relate respectfully to people from your own and from other cultures.
Inclusion
Diverse communities are meaningfully engaged in an organization. An inclusive organization is a safe, trusting environment in which everyone feels that they belong and have an equally empowering experience.
