Classifications of epithelium based on location and function
simple or stratified
Simple epithelium
single layer of epithelial cells found in places where you have little wear and tear
Two types of simple epithelium
endothelium and mesothelium
Endothelium
lines blood vessels, lymph vessels, alveoli, capillaries, and heart
Mesothelium
lines walls of body cavities and covers the viscera within them (pleura and peritoneum)
Stratified epithelium
multiple layers of epithelial cells found in places with a lot of wear and tear
Cell shape classifications
squamous, cuboidal, columnar, and transitional cells
Squamous cells
flat cells
Cuboidal cells
cube cells found in glands and their ducts
Columnar cells
long rectangular cells that typically line mucous membrane
Transitional cells
cells that can change shape, found in urinary system
How do you name stratified epithelium
based on the shape of surface cells
Function of glandular epithelium
secretion
Gland
may consist of one cell or group of specialized epithelial cells that secrete substances into ducts, onto surfaces, or into blood
Two types of glands
exocrine and endocrine
Exocrine glands
secrete their product into a duct
Examples of exocrine glands
mucous, ear wax, sweat glands
Endocrine glands
ductless
Example of endocrine gland
thyroid gland (secretes hormones into bloodstream)
