Corticosteroids
Potent anti-inflammatory drugs that relieve symptoms but do not cure the underlying disease.
Mineralocorticoid
Hormone class that helps regulate electrolyte and water balance in the body.
Macrodrip set
IV drip set delivering 10, 15, or 20 drops per mL.
Microdrip set
IV drip set delivering about 60 drops per mL.
Immunosuppressive agents
Drugs used to treat immune-mediated disorders by dampening immune response.
Autoimmune disease
Condition where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues.
Inactivated vaccines
Vaccines made from killed organisms; safe, stable, may need boosters and can include preservatives.
Live vaccines
Vaccines made from living organisms; often cheaper and require fewer doses; can be virulent or avirulent.
Modified live vaccines
Vaccines using live organisms that have reduced virulence to stimulate immunity.
Recombinant vaccines
Vaccines produced by modifying the DNA of organisms to express antigens.
Core vaccines
Basic vaccines recommended for all animals to protect against common contagious diseases.
Noncore vaccines
Vaccines recommended based on risk factors like geography and lifestyle.
Toxoid
Vaccine that induces immunity to a toxin rather than a bacterium or virus.
Vaccine reaction signs
Signs indicating a reaction to vaccination, such as vomiting, salivation, dyspnea, hives, lack of coordination, facial swelling.
Regenerative medicine
Use of cells and growth factors to repair damaged or poorly functioning tissues or organs.
Stem cells
Cells capable of differentiating into various tissue types; source of tissue renewal.
Nutraceuticals
Food components with health benefits; not FDA-evaluated for safety or efficacy.
Chondroprotective glucosamine
Agents that slow cartilage erosion; do not heal or regenerate cartilage, best used before arthritis.
Herbal medicine
Use of plants to treat disease; plant material can be dried, powdered, or formulated.
Triage
Evaluation to determine which patient is most severely ill and should be seen first.
Crash cart
Mobile resuscitation kit with meds and equipment (airway tools, IV supplies, monitors, etc.).
