What is the equilibrium constant?
The equilibrium constant, Kc is a ratio worked out from the concentrations of the products and reactants after equilibrium is reaches. It is essentially how far right the equilibrium is positioned
How do you write an expression for Kc?
The lower case letters, a, b, c, d are the number of moles of each substance in the equation.
The square brackets, [ ], mean the concentration in mol/dm³
Products on top, reactants on the bottom
How does changing the temperature affect the value of Kc?
If the change means more product is formed, Kc will rise
If the change means less product is formed, then Kc will decrease
What is the effect of changing the concentration on the value of Kc?
Kc is fixed at a given temperature
If the concentration of one thing in the equilibrium mixture changes, Kc stays the same but the concentrations of the others change in order to keep Kc the same
What is the effect of adding a catalyst on the value of Kc?
Catalysts have no effect of the position of equilibrium or on the value of Kc.
This is because a catalyst will increase the rate of both the forward and backward reactions by the same amount.
