802.11 Standards
Wireless networking standards such as Wi-Fi
Cellular
Mobile network connectivity such as 4G and 5G
Satellite
Internet access via satellite signals
802.3 standards
Ethernet working standards
Single-mode
Single very thin core, for long distance. More expensive and higher bandwidth
Multi-mode
Wider core and allows for multiple light paths. Best for shorter distances
Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cable
Short distance high speed connections. Preferred in smaller environments to connect devices
Twinaxial cable
High speed cable for data centers (double wire)
Coaxial cable
Single wire. Cable for TV, internet, and radio signals
Cable speeds
Data transmission rates of various cables
Plenum Cable
Fire resistance cable designed for HVAC systems with flame retardant and low smoke emission and nontoxic gas properties
Ethernet protocol
Networking protocol for wired connections
Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP)
Protocol designed for high speed data transfer in SANs (storage are networks)
Transceivers
A device that combines a transmitter and a receiver into a single module
SFP (Small form-factor pluggable)
Compact transceiver used in networking equipment for Ethernet and fiber channel connections. Ideal for connecting devices to fiber optic or copper cables. 1Gbps
QSFP (Quad small form-factor pluggable)
Designed for higher data rates. Supports speeds up to 40 Gbps (QSFP) or even 100 Gbps (QSFP28)
SC (subscriber connector)
Used in fiber optic connections, often in patch panels. Snap in
LC
Common in fiber optic connections. Snap in design and used in modern networks ideal for high density environments.
ST (Straight Tip)
Fiber optic connection in legacy systems twist and lock
MPO (multi-fiber push on)
High density fiber optic connections. Flat connector housing multiple fibers common in data centers. 40/100 Gbps networks common with QSFP transceivers
RJ11
Used in telephone and digital subscriber line connections (DSL). Small four pin connector
RJ45
Connector commonly used with Ethernet cables such as cat 5,6, and 7 cables. Small 8pins used to connect computers, routers, switches, and other network devices to create LANs
F type
Coaxial cable connector screw on for cable TV and the internet
BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman)
Quick lock connector used with coaxial cables for video, radio, and legacy networking. Common on CCTV and RF equipment
BNC Barrel
Small coupler used to join two BNC cables
BNC T
Coaxial connector shaped like a T that has three ports commonly used in networking, broadcasting, and instrument applications.
