What is selective attention in consciousness?
Focusing on a particular stimulus.
What are the three types of consciousness according to Freud?
Conscious, preconscious, and unconscious.
How does the unconscious mind differ from the conscious and preconscious?
The unconscious contains memories that are typically unavailable to awareness under most circumstances.
What is repression?
An automatic, unconscious drive to hide away knowledge that is too difficult or painful to deal with.
How is suppression different from repression?
Suppression is a deliberate choice to hide away knowledge that is too difficult or painful.
What is circadian rhythm?
Our natural cycle of sleep and waking within a 24-hour period.
How many stages of sleep do we cycle through each night?
We cycle through all five stages of sleep about five times a night.
What are the brain waves associated with awake state?
Beta waves.
What is REM Sleep also known as?
Paradoxical sleep.
What can happen if a person is sleep deprived?
They may experience REM rebound.
What is insomnia?
Inability to fall asleep.
What is narcolepsy?
Falling asleep suddenly and involuntarily.
What are sleep terrors?
Severe nightmares occurring during the deep stages of sleep.
What is primary nocturnal enuresis?
When a child has never developed complete night-time bladder control.
What is secondary nocturnal enuresis?
Accidental wetting after having had bladder control for six months, often linked to emotional stress.
What is daydreaming?
A state where one vividly imagines things while awake.
What is hypnosis?
A state where one is highly suggestible and acts as if in a trance.
What is biofeedback training?
Changing a biological function based on monitored information.
What distinguishes substance abuse from recreational substance use?
Substance abuse involves repeated use causing impairment in daily life functioning.
What is binge drinking?
Consuming 5+ drinks in a row for boys/men and 4+ for girls/women.
What is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome?
A condition involving confusion, memory impairment, and lying to fill in memory loss gaps due to chronic alcoholism.
What are depressants?
Drugs that slow down the nervous system.
What are stimulants?
Drugs that excite the nervous system.
What are hallucinogenics?
Drugs that produce sensations and perceptions without stimuli, creating false realities.
What can result from overdosing on drugs?
Long-term brain damage, impaired cognition, organ damage, and death.
