Backfill

Container stock
trees or shrubs packaged with their roots and a growing medium in a plastic or peat-fiber container
Girdling
cut or constrict bark so that growth is slowed or stopped by inhibiting the movement of nutrients, roots grow around main stem of tree restrict movement
Guy
a rope or wire used as a tree support

Stakes should be removed as soon as trees are rooted and anchored, about 1
year
Steps to Planting 1-5
1- Read Planting Plans & Construction Details for specific planting
locations & instructions, Designate staging area for trees, stakes, tools, compost, backfill, 3) Measure new tree and shrub locations according to plans. Measure from
fixed points, 4) Wear PPE, 5) Dig planting hole according to details & specifications.
What is important to remember when you dig a planting hole
• Usually 2 - 3 times as wide as the rootball
• Usually approximately 1”-2” shallower than the rootball
• Bottom of planting hole tamped firm to prevent settling

Construction Details and Specifications
Steps to Planting 6-13
Rough up (scarify) sides of planting hole with shovel, Remove tree from container by rolling on the ground and gently, place tree in hole 1-2 above, backfill ½ hole with soil, orent tree, backfill last ½ hole, construct temporary basin as directed, water tree
Tree Staking
Staking only when necessary – windy conditions, young trees need to sway to develop trunk taper, Follow staking instructions, Remove nursery stake at time of planting, Inspect stakes periodically, remove ASAP
