Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Just as you move off, test the brakes. They shouldn’t feel spongy or pull to one side.
Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
In the manual. You use a pressure gauge to check the tyres when they are cold.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The centre of the head restraint should align with the eyes.
Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges in the sides and to measure the tread depth you use a tread depth gauge with a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm.
Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
I would turn the lights on via the switch and then get out of the car and check to see if they are illuminated.
Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
Warning lights on the dashboard should come on.
Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working.
Operate the hazard lights and then get out the car to ensure that all indicators are flashing correctly.
Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working.
I’d have to ask for someone’s help or use a reflection while pushing my brake pedal down to see if they turn on.
Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Steering just after moving off will give a clear indication of whether it’s functioning properly because the steering should feel light and easy to turn.
Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you’d use them.
Turn them on via the switch in foggy and low visibility conditions.
Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.
Use the switch and check that the blue main beam light is on on the dashboard.
Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d know the engine has sufficient oil.
I’d remove the dipstick and wipe the end clean where it meets the oil level. Then I would reinsert it and remove it again, checking that the oil level is between the minimum and maximum markers. If the oil level is above the minimum marker, the engine has sufficient oil.
Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.
I’d use the minimum and maximum levels on the side of the coolant tank and make sure the level is between these markers. If the level is below the minimum marker, I would unscrew it and add coolant when the engine is off and cold.
Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
I’d identify the brake fluid reservoir and check the level against high and low markings.
