Binary Ionic Compound
A compound composed of two different elements, one being a metal and the other a nonmetal, where the metal forms cations and the nonmetal forms anions.
Ternary Ionic Compound
A compound composed of three or more different elements, containing at least one polyatomic ion.
Binary Molecular Compound
A compound composed of two nonmetals held together by covalent bonds.
Binary Acid
An acid that consists of two elements, hydrogen and a nonmetal.
Ternary Oxyacid
An acid that contains hydrogen, oxygen, and a third element, usually a nonmetal.
Monoatomic Cation
A cation consisting of a single atom that has lost one or more electrons.
Monoatomic Anion
An anion consisting of a single atom that has gained one or more electrons.
Polyatomic Cation
A charged ion composed of two or more atoms bonded together that has lost electrons.
Polyatomic Anion
A negatively charged ion composed of two or more atoms.
Systematic Naming
A method to name chemical compounds based on their composition and structure.
IUPAC
International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the organization that establishes the rules for naming chemical compounds.
