Qualitative test
Qualitative test is for identification purposes.
Quantitative analysis
Quantitative analysis is so you can measure quantities / volumes / concentrations.
Two parts of quantitive analysis
Gravimetric Analysis uses weights, and Volumetric Analysis uses volumes
A solution
A solution is a completely perfect mixture of a solvent and a solute, that are uniformly mixed together. It is homogenous, and it is evenly distributed.
Concentration of a solution
The concentration of a solution, is the amount of solute dissolved in a given volume of the solvent
A concentrated solution has more solute than solvent.
% percentage of a solute weight per weight (w/w)Â
10% w/w AlCl means 10g of NaCl per 100g of solution.
Weight per volume
Weight per volume means 10g of NaCl per 100cm2 of water.Â
Volume per volume %
Volume per volume % 10% ethanol means 10 cm3 of ethanol dissolved in 100cm3Â
Parts Per Million (PPM)
Parts Per Million (PPM) is per 1 million parts of a mixture there one part is the substance of interest.Â
In water, 1 ppm is equivalent to 1 milligram of solute per liter of water (mg/L).Â
In air, 1 ppm can represent 1 molecule of gas per 1 million air molecules. Â
