Medical assistants (MAs)

Allied health professionals who perform clinical/laboratory and administrative duties within a healthcare team

MAs serve as PATIENT NAVIGATORS:

who are people helping to identify patient needs and barriers, assist with coordination of care, and assist patients with finding community resources

American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

National Healthcare Association (NHA)

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

“Meaningful Use”

incentive program to improve clinical outcomes and provide cost effective care. It measures the QUALITY and QUANTITY of healthcare services.

Electronic Medical Record (EMS)

A digital version of a patient’s chart for a single practice or facility

Electronic Health Record (EHS)

A digital version of a patient’s chart that is used by multiple practices, providers, and locations within a system

Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE)

EMR/EHR allows providers to electronically enter orders and prescriptions. Only providers can NOT MAs

Providers

authorized to diagnose, treat, prescribe, bill insurance, and manage patient care

Physicians (MD or DO)

2 licenses: Medical Doctor (MD) and Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)

Hoslistic

treating the whole person, body, mind, emotions, and spirit instead of focusing on the symptoms of a disease

Residency

intense, on the job training for new physicians in their chosen practice areas

Registered Nurses (RNs)

provide and coordinate patient care in a wide variety of healthcare settings. They are NOT providers

Licensure

is required, is to have the LEGAL right and responsibility to engage in an activity or occupation

Certification

generally optional, but may be required for some employers

Reciprocity Agreements

between states acknowledge that a person who’s met the requirements to practice in one state is qualified to practice in the additional state

Endorsement

process of issuing a license to a person because they have the same license in another jurisdiction

Allied Health professionals

support the diagnosis, treatment, and patient care OUTSIDE of physicians, Nurses, and pharmacists

Medical Assistants are…

ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

PT

therapy on larger physical movements like walking, balance, and sports

Occupational Therapists (OT)

therapy of movements in daily living such as brushing teeth, getting dressed, feeding, etc.

Phlebotomists

Collect venous and capillary blood samples for lab testing

Western Medicine

approaches disease management with medications, radiation, and surgery

Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM)

healing practices outside of standard western medicine (ex: acupuncture, chiropractic care, and dietary therapy)

Ancillary Services

supportive or diagnostic measures to aid physicians, nurses, and healthcare providers in treating patients. (ex: CT, MRI, Lab tests, pharmacies, therapies, urgent care centers, durable medical equipment)

Scope of Practice

defines what a healthcare professional is trained and permitted to do in a clinical setting

Prioritization

Must do immediately

Sex: Biological (chromosomes, hormones, and reproductive systems)

Must be recorded on the patient’s chart. Important for determining the patient’s baseline anatomy, physiology, and genetics.
