Simple Squamous Epithelium
one cell layer of squashed, scale like cells, slides shown from above, no Lumen or spaces between cells, allows passage of materials, secretes lubricating substances, kidney glormeruli, air sacs of lungs

Stratified Squamous Epithelium
many layers of scale like cells, dark pink with a wavy edge (basement membrane), protects underlying tissues, moist linings of esophagus, mouth, vagina, epidermis of skin
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
one layer of cube-shaped cells, nucleus in center, secretion/absorption, kidney tubules, ovary surface, ducts and secretory portions of small glands
Simple Columnar Epithelium
one layer of tall rectangular cells nucleus off center, absorption/secretion of mucus and enzymes, propels mucus, digestive tract, gallbladder, excretory ducts of some glands, small bronchi, uterine tubes and parts of uterus
Areolar Connective Tissue (know elastic fibers, collagen fibers, fibroblasts)
Wraps and cushions organs, holds/conveys tissue fluids, phagocytize bacteria, inflammation, under epithelia (lamina propria of mucus membranes), surrounds blood vessels and organs
Adipose Connective Tissue
provides reserve food fuel, insulates against heat loss, supports/protects organs, under skin, around kidneys/eyeballs, within abdomen and breasts
Reticular Connect Tissue (know mast cells, reticular fibers)
forms stroma to support the other cell types (WBC, mast cells, macrophages), Lymphoid organs (lymph nodes bone marrow, spleen), thymus
Dense Regular Connective
attaches muscles to bones or to other muscles, attaches bones to bones, tendons, most ligaments, aponeuroses
Hyaline Cartilage (know chondrocyte in lacunae)
looks like eyeballs, provide flexible support within joints, reduce friction within joints, provides structural reinforcement, resists compressive stress, embryonic skeleton, ends of long bones, joint cavities, cartilages of ribs, nose, trachea, larynx,
Elastic Cartilage (know elastic fibers, chondrocyte in lacuna)
maintains shape of structure with flexibility, external ear, epiglottis,
Bone Tissue (know central (haversian) canal, lamellae, canaliculi, osteocyte in lacuna)
supports and protects, provides levers for the muscles to act on, stores calcium and other minerals, and fat, bones
Blood Tissue (know erythrocyte/RBC, leukocyte/WBC)
transport of respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, within blood vessels
Striated Skeletal Muscle Tissue (know nucleus, striations)
voluntary movement locomotion, manipulation of the environment, facial expression, in skeletal muscles
Striated Cardiac Muscle Tissue (know nucleus, striations, intercalated discs)
propels blood into circulation, walls of heart
Smooth Muscle Tissue (know nucleus)
walls of hollow organs, propels substances or objects (foodstuffs, urine, baby), along internal passageways, HINT: no striations
Nervous Tissue (know neuron, nucleus, cell processes/dendrites, cell body)
transmits electrical signals, brain, spinal cord, nerves
