Satire
A form of humor that criticizes human vices, follies, or shortcomings, often using wit, irony, or ridicule to inspire social change.
Farce
A light and humorous comedy. Relies more on physical than intellectual humor. The intention of farce is to entertain. Characters and events are highly exaggerated.
Comedy of Manners
A literary genre which humorously examines the customs and foibles of the upper class. Plots are artificially elaborate and clever. Language is witty and polished. Often involve romantic entanglements. Usually popular during periods of prosperity (The Victorian period).
Horatian Satire
more tolerant toward the absurdities in society and human behavior, and its primary goal is to amuse its audience.
Juvenalian Satire
seeks to inspire social change by making the audience feel indignant toward social injustice, rather than simply entertaining them.
