The Samanas
A wandering ascetic. They were three thin worn-out men, neither old nor young, with dusty and bleeding shoulders, practically naked, scorched by the sun, solitary, strange, and hostile. An ascetic is a person who abstains from possessions and pleasures and they get food from town to town. Siddartha’s goal is to reach enlightenment through suffering and emptiness.
The Brahmin’s
To be the highest and wealthiest social class. They have access to scriptures, rituals, and political affairs. They were priests and the wise men were successful in having the most profound knowledge but could not experience it. Siddartha does not stay at home because he feels no joy in his heart.
Atman
Soul or spirit in your mind, body, or soul. It means the soul is reborn and you find your inner self.
Om
Om focuses on his past and present and Siddartha understands he is not above anyone else and gains sympathy/compassion. Siddartha has found salvation and is united with the stream of events and life.
Gotama
Gotama is closer to the real nature of the real Buddha. He is the one who already achieved enlightenment and Govinda decided to stay with Gotama even though Siddartha left.
Samsara
The cycle of death and rebirth to which life in the material world is bound. Basically life revolved around to materialistic values and suffering. Siddartha unfortunately underwent his own Samsara.
Hinduism
A major religious and cultural tradition of south asia. The purpose is to seek and realize the divinity within all of us.
Buddhism
Focusing on achieving enlightenment which is a state of inner peace and wisdom.
Abultion
A ceremonial meshing and/or cleansing.
