Multi-Store Memory Model
Proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968.
The model suggests that our memory consists of separate structures in which information is processed. It’s inspired by computer science in the way that memory can be encoded, stored and retrieved.
Works in a sequential, uniform way.
Proposes that sensory memory has a small duration and capacity.
With selective attention, sensory memory is transferred to the short-term memory.
With rehearsal, short-term memory is transferred to the long-term memory.
Sensory Memory
Originates from sensory information with the help of the 5 senses: hear, smell, touch, sight and taste.
Short-Term Memory
Capacity = 7+2 Items
Duration = 6-18 Seconds
Long-Term Memory
Capacity = Unlimited
Duration = Lifelong
