Energy Transformation
The process where energy changes from one form to another, such as chemical energy stored in coal converting into electrical energy.

Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
The specific chemical form in which usable energy is stored for metabolic processes, containing three phosphate groups.
High-Energy Bond
A bond between phosphate groups in ATP denoted by a "~", which releases energy available for cellular processes when broken.
ATP/ADP Cycle
A mechanism functioning analogously to a rechargeable battery, where ATP represents the charged state and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) represents the discharged state.
Metabolism
The sum total of all biochemical reactions that occur in the body.
Catabolic Reactions
Biochemical reactions that break down complex molecules, such as glucose or starch, releasing energy to synthesize ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate.
Anabolic Reactions
Biochemical reactions that build complex structures and typically require energy provided simultaneously by catabolic processes.

Cellular Respiration
A major metabolic process in which glucose enters intracellular fluid and mitochondria for catabolism, transferring energy to ATP high-energy bonds for cellular work.

Assimilation
The incorporation of absorbed nutrient units, such as amino acids into proteins, which is dependent on ATP generated by cellular respiration.

Matrix
The non-living protein-based material, or intercellular cement, synthesized and secreted by cells into extracellular space to connect adjacent cells.

Intercellular Communication
The vital exchange of chemical signals between cells and tissues to maintain physiological balance across dynamic cell communities.
Insulin
A hormone secreted by the pancreas in response to elevated blood glucose levels that binds to liver cell receptors to prompt glucose removal and storage.
