What is Chi² used for?
To test for difference or association between things such as the difference between numbers of species in two different woodlands or the frequency of storm events in different locations across the UK.
When is Chi² used?
When data is collected in frequencies.
1st reason it’s useful.
It is a mathematical test which therefore provides more accurate analysis than just looking at graphs and tables of information.
2nd reason its useful
It allows you to see if something has occurred by chance or not
3rd reason it’s useful
It used the ‘raw’ data and does not rank the data like other statistical methods.
4th reason it’s useful
It can be used alongside bar graphs and histograms to support more in depth analysis.
5th reason its useful
It can be used to compare multiple locations.
What is a disadvantage of chi²?
You need your observed values to be greater than the 20 and expected values to be greater than 5 which means it does not work with a small sample size.
Important to remember!!
If the chi-square value is higher than the critical value, you reject the null hypothesis and suggest that there is a significant difference/association.
