Polyesters
React a dicarboxylic acid with a diol. The repeated functional group is an ester and the byproduct is water. The dicarboxylic acid may also be replaced with an acid chloride.
Polyamides
React a dicarboxylic acid with a diamine OR combine two amino acids. The repeated functional group is an amide and the byproduct is water. The dicarboxylic acid may also be replaced with an acid chloride.
Polycarbonates
React a diol with a phosgene. The repeated functional group is a carbonate and the byproduct is hydrochloric acid.
Polysiloxanes
React water with a silyl dichloride to form a dihydroxysilane that then polymerizes. The repeated functional group is a siloxane and the byproduct is first hydrochloric acid, then water.
Polyurethanes
React an isocyanate (N=C=O) with an alcohol. The repeated functional group is a carbamate (basically a secondary amine plus a carboxylic acid) and there is no byproduct.
