Lymphangitis
Inflamed lymphatic vessels
Lymphadenopathy
refers to the swelling of lymph nodes which can be secondary to bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, autoimmune disease, and malignancy.
Bubo
an infected, swollen node; sign of bubonic plague.
Lymphoma
Any neoplasm of the lymphoid tissue; Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins.
Hodgkin’s disease
A type of lymphoma; swollen, non-tender nodes, high cure rate.
Lymphatic Filariasis
A disease in which the lymphatics become inflamed due to an infection by filarial worms; lymph can’t return to the circulatory system; localized edema
Splenomegaly
An enlarged spleen due to microbial infection.
Tonsillitis
Inflamed tonsils due to microbial infection; tender and swollen
Mastectomy
Surgical removal of the breast tissue due to cancer
Radical mastectomy
Removal of breast, underlying muscle, and axial nodes
Modified radical mastectomy
Removal of breast tissue only and nodes
Spleen
located in the upper part of the abdomen above the stomach and under the rib cage. It’s part of the lymphatic system and functions as a filter, storage, and immune defense.
Tonsils
located in the pharyngeal region, they filter saliva and mucus, not lymph. Lymphatic tissue is found within the tissue.
Appendix
Tubular offshoot of the larg intestine; contains lymph follicles.
Peyer’s patches
Groups of lymphocytes in the intestinal mucosa.
Lymph nodes
Filters the lymphatic fluid.
Lacteals
found in the wall of the small intestines, Their primary role is to absorb dietary fats, and fat-soluble vitamins from digested food.
Lymphoid follicles
Small clusters of dormant B lymphocytes. They are found within lymphoid tissue and organs, and play a central role in the body’s adaptive immune response.
Right lymphatic duct
Filters lymph form the (1) Right arm (2) Right upper chest, face, and head.
Thoracic duct
Filters lymph from the (1) Left arm (2) Left and right legs (3) Left upper chest and face (4) Abdominal area
Lymph vessel structure
Thicker walls than capillaries, with smooth muscles that helps lymph movement. Has valves that prevent back flow. Function is to transport lymph toward lymph nodes and larger ducts.
Lymph
Found in loose connected tissue; it is a clear, slightly yellowish fluid that circulates through the lymphatic system. functions in fluid balance, immune surveillance, and fat transport
