GFI
Certified Group Fitness Instructors who adapt teaching strategies and leadership techniques to diverse class settings like online and outdoor environments.
Live Online Format
A class delivered in real-time where the GFI streams to an audience and can interact directly with participants.
Prerecorded Format
An on-demand class recorded by the GFI and posted for participants to access at any time, allowing for a more polished product.
Hybrid Format
A delivery method where the GFI teaches in-person participants while simultaneously streaming the class to online participants.
Internal Cues
Verbal instructions that direct the exerciser's attention inwardly toward their own body and movement process, such as keeping wrists below shoulders during a push-up.
External Cues
Verbal instructions that move the attention outward toward the environment and the movement outcome, such as telling participants to explode off the ground.
Visualization
An external cueing method where the GFI asks participants to imagine a scenario, such as jumping over a puddle of water, to enhance movement effectiveness.
Green Exercise
Physical activity performed outdoors in a natural environment, which has been linked to mental health improvements and stress reduction.
Heat Cramps
Muscle spasms caused by the loss of electrolytes and fluids, characterized by painful cramps, thirst, and dehydration.
Heat Exhaustion
A heat-related illness marked by a weak rapid pulse, low blood pressure, fatigue, dizziness, and profuse sweating.
Heat Stroke
A serious medical emergency resulting from heat overexposure, characterized by hot dry skin and a core temperature over 104∘F (40∘C).
Hypothermia
A medical condition where body temperature drops below 95∘F (35∘C), leading to shivering, numbness, and potential cardiac arrest.
Pre-exercise Fluid Intake
The recommendation to drink 5 to 7ml/kg (0.08 to 0.11oz/lb) of fluid at least four hours before exercising.
Rapid Recovery Hydration
The goal to drink 1.5L/kg (23oz/lb) of body weight lost to fully replace fluid and electrolyte deficits.
SPF 30
The minimum sun protection factor recommended for broad-spectrum sunscreen to prevent sun damage during outdoor exercise.
