Schizophrenia
A mental disorder affecting around 1% of the population, characterized by positive symptoms (atypical experiences in addition to normal experiences) and negative symptoms (loss of usual experiences).
Positive Symptoms
Atypical symptoms in schizophrenia, including hallucinations (unusual sensory experiences with no basis in reality) and delusions (irrational beliefs not based in reality).
Negative Symptoms
Atypical experiences in schizophrenia, such as speech poverty (reduced speech frequency and quality) and avolition (loss of motivation and goal-oriented behavior).
Comorbidity
The occurrence of two disorders or conditions together, like schizophrenia and depression or substance abuse, raising questions about separate classification.
Symptom Overlap
When two or more conditions share symptoms, like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, challenging their distinct classification.
Gender Bias
Men are more commonly diagnosed with schizophrenia than women, potentially leading to underdiagnosis in women and limited access to treatment.
Culture Bias
Symptoms of schizophrenia may be interpreted differently in various cultures, leading to misinterpretations and disparities in diagnosis, such as in African-Caribbean populations in the UK.
