Covalent Bonding
The sharing of electrons between two atoms.
Lewis Dot Structures
Diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist.
Coordinate Bonds
A type of covalent bond where both electrons in the bond come from one atom.
The Octet Rule
Atoms tend to form bonds until they are surrounded by eight valence electrons.
Resonance
The concept that some molecules can be represented by two or more valid Lewis structures.
Paramagnetic
Molecules with unpaired electrons that are attracted to a magnetic field.
Diamagnetic
Molecules with no unpaired electrons that are repelled by a magnetic field.
Formal Charge
A calculation to determine the charge of an atom in a molecule; calculated as V - L - ½B.
Multiple Bonds
Bonds in which two or more pairs of electrons are shared, such as double and triple bonds.
Exceptions to the Octet Rule
Certain molecules or atoms can violate the octet rule by having fewer or more than eight electrons in their valence shell.
