Homeostasis
The body's ability to maintain a steady state by compensating for changes through feedback and regulation in response to external and internal changes.
Metabolism
The sum of all physical and chemical reactions necessary to sustain life, varying among individuals due to factors like age, gender, and heredity.
Catabolism
A destructive process that breaks down complex substances into simpler ones, usually releasing energy, as seen in digestion.
Anabolism
A constructive process that converts simple compounds into complex substances needed for cellular activities, involving hormones and enzymes.
Cell
The most basic unit of life, capable of functioning independently.
Cell membrane/wall
A protective barrier that selectively allows nutrients in and wastes out, with glucose, oxygen, and water as food for the cell.
Nucleus
The control center of the cell that regulates growth and metabolism, containing DNA (genetic material).
Cytoplasm
The substance that holds the contents of the cell and contains materials necessary for growth, digestion, energy, and information transport.
