Body Functions/ body organization

Body Functions

*Homeostasis- steady state- the body maintains this by compensating for changes in a process that involves feed back and regulation in response to external and internal Changes.

cat

'Metabolism- the sum of all the physical and chemical reactions necessary to sustain life.

-different for everyone

-many factors involved (age gender, heredity)

•Catabolism- is a destructive process by which complex substances are broken down into simple substances, usually with the release of energy

-digestion

*Anabolism- is a constructive process by which the body converts simple compounds into complex substances needed to carry out the cellular activities of the body.

-hormones, enzymes

Organization

1. The cell is the most basic unit of life (smallest part of a living being that can function on its own)|

2. Basic cellular structure

A. cell membrane/wall

(1)Protective barrier

(2)Selective to allow nutrients in and wastes out

(3)Food for the cell is glucose, oxygen and water

A. Nucleus

B.Control's growth and metabolism of entire cell

Contains DNA (genetic material)

C. Cytoplasm

(1) Holds contents of cell

(2) Contains the materials for growth, digestion, energy, storage, transport of information
