Absolute direction
Direction described using the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west, independent of any starting location.
Absolute distance
The precise, measurable distance between two places, expressed using standard units such as miles or kilometers.
Absolute location
The precise, fixed position of a place on Earth's surface, often identified using a coordinate system such as latitude and longitude.
Area distortion
A change in the size of landmasses that results when Earth's curved surface is projected onto a flat map—for example, the Mercator projection makes Greenland appear far larger than it actually is.
Cartography
The science, art, and practice of creating and analyzing maps.
Census data
Quantitative information gathered through an official count of a population (age, income, household size, etc.) to identify and analyze spatial patterns.
Choropleth map
A thematic map that uses different colors or shades to represent the value of a variable (such as population density or income) within defined areas.
Clustering
A spatial pattern in which objects, people, or activities are grouped together within an area.
Conic Projections
A map projection created by projecting Earth's surface onto a cone; it is most accurate for mid-latitude regions and is commonly used for maps of the United States.
Density
The frequency with which something (people, buildings, or resources) occurs within a given unit of area.

Dispersal
A spatial pattern in which objects, people, or activities are spread out over a large area rather than grouped together.
Distance decay

Dot distribution map

Elevation

A largely rejected theory holding that the physical environment (climate, terrain, natural resources) is the primary force controlling human behavior, culture, and development.
Equator

Field observation
A method of collecting geographic data by directly observing and recording conditions, activities, or landscapes at a location.
Flow
The movement of people, goods, information, or ideas between places, which links locations across space.
Formal region
A region defined by one or more shared characteristics—cultural, physical, economic, or political—that are present throughout the area, such as a country or climate zone.
Functional region
A region organized around a central point, or node, and defined by the activity or influence that connects the area to that point, such as the delivery area of a newspaper or the service area of a hospital.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
A computer-based system that captures, stores, analyzes, and displays geographically referenced data in layers, allowing geographers to organize and combine different types of spatial information.
Geographical Data
Information about locations, features, or patterns on Earth's surface that geographers collect and analyze to understand spatial relationships.
Geospatial Data
Data tied to a specific geographic location, frequently collected and analyzed using technology such as GPS, GIS, or remote sensing.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
A satellite-based navigation system that provides precise location, speed, and time information to receivers anywhere on Earth.
Global scale
A level of geographic analysis that examines patterns and relationships across the entire world.
Graduated symbol map
A thematic map (also called a proportional symbol map) that uses symbols of different sizes to represent the varying magnitude of data at specific locations.
Homogeneous Region
A formal (uniform) region in which the defining characteristic is present consistently, without exception, at every point within its boundaries.
Human Environment Interaction
One of the traditional themes of geography, referring to the relationship between people and their physical surroundings, including how humans depend on, adapt to, and modify their environment—and how the environment affects human activity in turn.
International Dateline
An imaginary line running roughly along the 180° meridian of longitude where, by international agreement, the calendar date changes by one day when crossed.
Isoline map
A thematic map that uses lines to connect points of equal value—such as elevation, temperature, or air pressure—across a geographic area.
Land use
The way people use and manage land for a particular purpose, such as agriculture, residential development, industry, or conservation.
Landscape Analysis
A method of collecting geographic data by examining the visible, human-made and natural features of an area to draw conclusions about how a place has been used or changed over time.
Latitude
Imaginary horizontal lines that circle Earth parallel to the equator, used to measure distance in degrees north or south of the equator.
Local scale
A level of geographic analysis that focuses on a small area, such as a neighborhood, city block, or single community.
Location
The specific position of a place or feature on Earth's surface, described in either absolute or relative terms.
Longitude
Imaginary vertical lines running from the North Pole to the South Pole, used to measure distance in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Map distortion/projection
The unavoidable inaccuracy that occurs when the curved, three-dimensional surface of Earth is represented on a flat, two-dimensional map; every projection distorts at least one of four properties—shape, area, distance, or direction.
Mental map
An individual's personal, internalized image of a place, based on their own knowledge, experiences, and perceptions rather than on measured data.
Mercator projection
A cylindrical map projection that accurately preserves shape and direction—making it useful for navigation—but significantly distorts the size of landmasses, especially near the poles.
National scale
A level of geographic analysis that examines patterns and relationships within the boundaries of a single country.
Natural resources
Materials or substances that occur naturally in the environment—such as water, minerals, or forests—and are used by humans to meet their needs.
Online mapping
A geospatial technology that allows users to view, create, and interact with maps and geographic data through internet-based platforms.
Online visualization
A geospatial technology that presents geographic data through interactive digital tools—such as charts, dashboards, or web maps—accessible online.
Pattern
The arrangement of objects, people, or activities across space, which can be described as clustered, dispersed, linear, or random.
Perceptual/vernacular region
A region defined by people's subjective feelings or perceptions about a place rather than by objective, measurable characteristics; its boundaries can differ depending on who is asked (e.g., "the South" or "the Midwest").
Peters Projection
An equal-area map projection that accurately represents the relative size of landmasses but distorts their shapes.
Photographic Interpretation
A method of collecting geographic data by analyzing photographs—aerial or ground-level—to identify features and patterns within a landscape.
Physical map
A reference map that shows natural features of Earth's surface, such as mountains, rivers, and bodies of water.
Place
A specific point on Earth distinguished by unique physical and/or human characteristics that give it identity and meaning.
Placelessness
The loss of a location's unique identity and character, often caused by standardized development—such as chain stores and franchises—that makes it resemble many other places.
Policy Documents
Written government or organizational records that geographers use as a source of spatial information about decisions, regulations, or plans affecting a place.
Political map
A reference map that shows human-made boundaries, such as countries, states, and cities.
Environmental Possibilism
A theory holding that the physical environment sets limits and offers opportunities, but that human choice, culture, and technology determine how people adapt to and use that environment.
Prime Meridian
The imaginary line of longitude at 0°, passing through Greenwich, England, from which all other lines of longitude are measured.
Qualitative Data
Descriptive, non-numerical information about people or places, such as personal accounts, interviews, or field observations.
Quantitative Data
Numerical information that can be measured and statistically analyzed, such as population counts or income levels.
Reference maps
Maps designed to show the location of places and geographic features, such as political or physical maps.
Region
An area of Earth's surface unified by one or more shared characteristics that distinguish it from surrounding areas.
Regional analysis
The geographic practice of examining and comparing regions to understand their shared characteristics, boundaries, and change over time.
Regional scale
A level of geographic analysis that examines patterns within an area larger than a single locality but smaller than an entire nation, often spanning parts of multiple states or countries.
Relative direction
Direction described in relation to a reference point, using terms such as "up," "down," "left," or "right," rather than fixed compass points.
Relative distance
The distance between two places measured in terms of time, cost, or effort required to travel between them, rather than in fixed units of measurement.
Relative location
The position of a place described in relation to other known places or landmarks (its site and situation), rather than by fixed coordinates.
Remote sensing
The collection of information about Earth's surface from a distance, typically using satellites or aircraft equipped with sensors or cameras.
Robinson Projection
A compromise map projection that reduces, but does not eliminate, distortion in shape, area, distance, and direction, making it a popular choice for general world maps.
Satellite imagery
Images of Earth's surface captured by orbiting satellites, used as a source of geospatial data.
Satellite navigation system
A network of orbiting satellites, such as GPS, that provides location and positioning data to users on Earth.
Scale
(1) The ratio between distance on a map and actual distance on Earth's surface; (2) the level at which a geographic pattern is analyzed, ranging from local to global.
Shape distortion
An inaccurate representation of the outline or form of landmasses that results when Earth's curved surface is flattened onto a map.
Site
The specific physical characteristics of a place's location, such as its terrain, climate, and available resources.
Situation
The location of a place relative to other places and its connections to the surrounding region; also called relative location.
Space
The physical gap or distance between two or more objects, points, or places.
Spatial Interaction
The movement or flow of people, goods, ideas, or information between two or more places.
Sustainability
The use of Earth's resources in a way that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Thematic maps
Maps designed to display the spatial pattern or distribution of a particular subject or data set, such as population density or climate.
Time-space compression
The reduction in the time it takes to travel, communicate, or move goods between distant places, largely due to advances in transportation and communication technology.
Topographic map
A physical map that uses contour lines to show the elevation and shape of the land's surface.
Toponym
The name given to a place, often reflecting its physical characteristics, history, or the people who named it.
