What were the aims of the Favela Bairro Project?
improve infastructure e.g power supplies, water

What did they improve?
local authority provided residents with materials for a ‘self help scheme’ to construct own housing e.g breeze blocks and cement
Electricity, water and sanitation services improved
People given addreses, given legal ownership of land
Secured hillsides to stop landslides and cable car built from favela to city centre with residents getting a free return ticket each day
What are the positive outcomes?
The program had a small but statistically impact on improved school attendance
Today, almost most houses in Rocinha are made from concrete and brick
Most have basic sanitation, plumbing and electricity
What are the negative outcomes?
$1 billion budget did not cover all favelas
New infastructure not being not being maintained
Rent rise in improved favelas meaning poorest worse off
Cable car Closed 2017 because drug gangs took advantage of them
