Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis, founded by Freud, is a therapeutic approach where patients verbalise their thoughts to uncover repressed trauma in the unconscious mind, which may be linked to criminal behaviour. The therapist’s goal is to bring these issues into conscious awareness so they can be addressed.
Dream Analysis
Freud believed all dreams are meaningful. Analysing dreams can reveal clues about the unconscious mind, including repressed memories that may be influencing criminal behaviour.
Freudian Slip
A Freudian slip is when someone accidentally says one word but means another. Freud believed these slips could expose hidden, unconscious thoughts.
Free Association
A method where patients lie comfortably and speak freely without censorship. This can allow repressed thoughts or memories to surface from the unconscious mind.
Oakridge Case Study
In 1968, Dr Elliott Barker treated violent psychopaths by locking them naked in a room for 11 days, giving them LSD and food through straws in the wall. Follow-up studies showed they were one-third more likely to reoffend violently compared to untreated offenders.
