What is the difference between emergent and submergent coastlines?
Emergent: Relative sea level falls or land rises.
Submergent: Relative sea level rises or land sinks.
Both are linked to long-term climate change and glacial processes.
How are raised beaches formed?
Wave-cut platform forms at sea level.
Relative sea level falls (or land rises due to isostatic rebound).
Former beach becomes stranded above current sea level.
A raised beach and fossil cliff remain.
What evidence suggests a coastline has emerged?
Raised beaches
Fossil cliffs
Marine sediments above current sea level
How are rias formed?
River valley develops during lower sea levels.
Post-glacial sea-level rise floods the valley.
Creates a wide, branching inlet.
Example: Kingsbridge Estuary, Devon.
What are the characteristics of a ria?
Drowned river valley
Relatively shallow
Irregular branching shape
No steep glacial sides
How are fjords formed?
Glacier erodes a deep U-shaped valley.
Ice melts after glaciation.
Rising sea level floods the valley.
Example: Sognefjorden, Norway.
What features distinguish fjords?
Deep, Steep, U Shaped, Glacial Origin
What features distinguish rias?
Shallow, Gradual, V Shaped, River Origin
Why are rias and fjords considered submergent landforms?
Because they formed when sea level rose after the last glacial period and flooded existing valleys.
