Strip Flooring
thin flooring with tongue and groove edges
Parquet Flooring
Made of preassembled units of several small, thin slats of wood in a variety of patterns.
May be finished or unfinished.
Usually sold in 12" squares, 5/16" thick, for mastic application.
Easier and cheaper to install than other types of floors & wide range of designs.

Quarry Tile
Really durable, great for back of house spaces
Thick - set
Used when subfoor is uneven or when stone varies in thickness
Thin - set
Less expensive, cheaper install. Good for uniform thickness
Resilient Flooring
Generic term describing several types of composition materials made from various resins, fibers, plasticizers, and fillers.
Formed under heat and pressure to produce thin material, either sheets or tiles.
Applied with mastic to subfloor of concrete, plywood, or other.
Some may be installed only on floors above grade, others may be placed below, on, or above grade.
Common types: Vinyl, rubber, cork
Vinyl flooring
Durable to abrasion, grease, water, and alkalis.
Rubber flooring
Made from synthetic rubber. Good resistance to loads, but not resistant to oil or grease
Wool carpet fibers
Natural, durable, resilient
- expensive
Nylon carpet fibers
Economical carpet material that is very strong and wear resistant
Wilton carpet
complex patterns into carpet and can create different levels of cut-pile, multilevel loop
Axminster carpet
range of patterns/ colors but same pile height
Tufting
pile yarn is punched through the backing with rows of needles, like a sewing machine

Carpet Methenamine pill test
Test measures the response of a carpet sample to a burning methenamine tablet
Ceramic Tile
Made from clay or clay mixture
pretty durable, easy to clean, and install
Porcelain tile
Lighter in color and denser than ceramic tile
- more durable, and less porous than ceramic tile
Laminate Flooring
Printed sheet with fiberboard core, backing, and wear layer
Seamless Flooring
High performance flooring, used when extreme hardness, severe stain & chemical resistance or excellent water resistance needed
