What is anemia?
A condition characterized by a lower-than-normal percentage/function of erythrocytes, resulting in decreased oxygen delivery to body tissues.
What are common symptoms of anemia?
Lethargy, shortness of breath, pallor, and palpitations.
What are two types of anemia that can be identified on a blood smear?
Iron-deficiency anemia and sickle-cell anemia.
A patient has decreased oxygen delivery to tissues and symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, pale skin, and palpitations. What condition is most likely?
Anemia.
What is polycythemia?
An abnormally high percentage of erythrocytes (red blood cells) in the blood.
What can cause polycythemia?
Abnormalities in red bone marrow, improper blood transfusion, or blood doping.
A blood smear shows an unusually high number of erythrocytes. What condition does this suggest?
Polycythemia.
What is leukemia?
A disease characterized by abnormal leukocytes (white blood cells) that do not perform normal functions and proliferate rapidly.
How does acute leukemia differ from chronic leukemia?
Acute leukemia progresses rapidly and is more commonly seen in children and young adults; chronic leukemia progresses more slowly and is more common in middle-aged and older adults.
A patient has rapidly proliferating abnormal white blood cells that do not function normally. What disease is most likely?
Leukemia.
What causes infectious mononucleosis?
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a type of herpesvirus.
What are common symptoms of infectious mononucleosis?
Fever, sore throat, and fatigue.
How is infectious mononucleosis usually treated?
It is usually self-limiting, so treatment generally involves rest and supportive care.
A patient has fever, a sore throat, and significant fatigue caused by Epstein-Barr virus. What condition is most likely?
Infectious mononucleosis.
What is eosinophilia?
An abnormally high eosinophil count; it can be associated with parasitic infections and allergic/immune reactions.
A blood smear shows an increased number of eosinophils. What condition does this indicate?
Eosinophilia.
What is hypercoagulation/hypercoagulability?
An increased tendency of the blood to form clots.
What is an embolus?
A free-floating clot or other material that travels through the bloodstream
What is hemophilia?
A group of inherited bleeding disorders in which blood takes abnormally long to clot.
Which clotting factors are associated with hemophilia?
Factor VIII in hemophilia A and factor IX in hemophilia B.
What is erythroblastosis fetalis?
Hemolytic disease of the newborn caused by maternal antibodies attacking fetal erythrocytes
How can an Rh-negative mother cause erythroblastosis fetalis?
Anti-D antibodies from an Rh-negative mother can cross the placenta and destroy Rh-positive fetal red blood cells.
What are erythroblasts?
Immature red blood cells.
What is diabetes insipidus?
A disorder involving inadequate ADH effect, often due to damage involving the hypothalamus or posterior pituitary, causing excessive thirst and excessive urination
What are the major symptoms of diabetes insipidus?
Excessive thirst and excessive urine volume.
What is pituitary dwarfism?
Abnormally slow growth caused by inadequate growth hormone secretion during childhood; the body remains proportionate.
What is a characteristic feature of pituitary dwarfism?
A slow or flat growth rate, often less than about 2 inches per year, with proportional body development.
What causes gigantism?
Excessive growth hormone secretion before puberty, commonly due to a benign pituitary tumor.
What are characteristics of gigantism?
Excessive height, lengthening of bones/muscles, and enlargement of organs due to excess growth hormone before puberty.
What causes acromegaly?
Excessive growth hormone secretion after puberty, commonly due to a benign pituitary tumor.
How does acromegaly differ from gigantism?
Acromegaly occurs after puberty, while gigantism occurs before puberty.
What are common effects of acromegaly?
Thickening/enlargement of bones and soft tissues and enlargement of organs.
What causes seasonal affective disorder (SAD) according to the case?
Reduced exposure to daylight during long winter months, which can increase melatonin production
What are common symptoms of seasonal affective disorder?
Feelings of hopelessness, increased appetite, increased sleep, and lethargy.
What is diabetes mellitus?
A disorder characterized by abnormally high blood glucose levels.
What causes Type 1 diabetes mellitus?
Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, resulting in little or no insulin production.
What causes Type 2 diabetes mellitus?
Insulin resistance and/or inadequate insulin secretion, causing the body to have difficulty using insulin effectively.
What is the key difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?
Type 1 primarily involves autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells; Type 2 primarily involves insulin resistance with progressive impairment of insulin secretion.
A patient has high blood glucose because pancreatic beta cells have been destroyed by an autoimmune process. What type of diabetes is most likely?
Type 1 diabetes mellitus.

What is gestational diabetes?

What is a goiter?
Enlargement of the thyroid gland.
What symptoms can a large goiter cause?
A visible swelling/lump in the neck that may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing.
What causes Graves' disease?
An abnormal autoimmune response in which antibodies stimulate the thyroid gland, causing excessive thyroid hormone production.
What are common symptoms of Graves' disease?
Exophthalmos, double vision, difficulty concentrating, and restlessness.
