Social Organization
One of the 7 Elements of Culture — The way people in a culture organize themselves into families, groups, and social roles.
Extended Family
A family structure that includes multiple generations living together or in close proximity, often encompassing grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Nuclear Family
A family unit consisting of two parents and their children living together.
Patriarchy
A social system in which men hold primary power, dominating in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege, and control of property.
Matriarchy
A social system in which women hold primary power, often influencing leadership roles and social privileges.
Customs & Traditions
One of the 7 Elements of Culture — Practices and behaviors that are shared by a culture and often passed from one generation to the next.
Language
One of the 7 Elements of Culture — A system people use to communicate and share ideas. The cornerstone of culture.
Art, Literature, & Intellectual Advances
One of the 7 Elements of Culture — The ways a culture expresses ideas, creativity, and knowledge.
Religion
One of the 7 Elements of Culture — A system of beliefs and practices that helps people understand life, the world, and their place in it.
Government
One of the 7 Elements of Culture — The system society uses to make laws, make decisions, and maintain order.
Economics
One of the 7 Elements of Culture — The way society produces, exchanges, and uses goods and services. How we make a living.
Cultural Diffusion
The spread of cultural traits, beliefs and social activities from one group to another, often resulting in the blending of different cultures.
Cultural Hearth
The geographic origin or center where a particular culture trait develops and from which it diffuses (spreads) to other areas.
Relocation Diffusion
The process by which cultural traits are transferred from one location to another through the migration of people.
Expansion Diffusion
The process by which cultural traits spread continuously outward from their origin (hearth), typically through various means such as communication or technology, without the relocation of the people carrying them.
Contagious Diffusion
Type of expansion diffusion. Cultural trait spreads person to person to person.
Hierarchical Diffusion
Type of expansion diffusion. The process by which cultural traits spread from people or places of high status, authority and/or influence to others.
Stimulus Diffusion
Type of expansion diffusion. The process by which a cultural trait or idea is taken by a new group, but is adapted or changed to fit the new culture.
Causes of Cultural Change
exploration, imperialism, colonialism, migration, trade, urbanization, globalization
Acculturation
When people within one culture ADOPT some of the traits of another culture, while still RETAINING their own distinct culture.
Assimilation
When the interaction of two cultures results in one culture ADOPTING almost ALL of the customs, traditions, language, and other traits of the other. This can be forced or voluntary.
Cultural Syncretism
The blending of elements from different cultures to create a new cultural practice, belief, tradition, or form of expression. It can occur in almost any element of culture.
