Who are the New Right?

Politicians, sociologists and researchers, advocate for the nuclear family and its traditional values. They support conventional gender roles, with men as the breadwinners and women responsible for childcare and housework.

What do they argue?

The breakdown of the nuclear family hinders adequate socialisation, warning that single-parent families lack strong male role models, leading to delinquency and anti-social behaviour.

What does Murray Claim?

Stresses Individual responsibility for children and oppose state welfare, citing welfare dependency and the emergence of an underclass.

What is the problem of the New Rights ideas on single mother?

• Single mothers are someone to blame- thinks links to the idea of moral panics and folk devils.

• Approximately 1% of single parents in teh UK are teenagers.

• 39 is the average age of a single parent.

• Most single mothers are in paid work.

• 1 in 4 families are headed by a single parent, children are as capable as being just as happy in a single parent family.

• The media also plays a role in the representation of single parent families, fulfilling the negative narrative pushed by traditional new right ideologies on the family. E.g. demonstrated as argumentative, dysfunctional, chaotic, stressful, etc. However, single parent families are more likely to be the opposite, escaping toxic relationships.

What does the new right support?

The familial ideology.

• In both new and old adverts, the girl and the boy were being socialised into their gendered norms (expressive and instrumental). In videoed women are seen washing up and men are seen, sat down, reading the newspaper which could be linked to the functionalist warm bath theory.

• “As marriage is redefined to accommodate same-sex couples, this reinforces the irrelevance of marriage to parenthood”- Patricia Morgan- Does this necessarily lead to inadequate gender role socialisation?

• “Teenage pregnancies often leads to a whole life of state dependence. The teenage mother is rarely able to gain a full education or develop a career.”- Only 1% of single mothers are teenagers (moral panics/folk devils).
