1) record room temp and tap water temp

3) put the Mg tablet in one of the water bottles
4) observe the control water bottle (no tablet) and the HEW tablet water bottle, recording observations at 1, 3, 4, 5, and 10 minutes (looking for bubbles/cloudiness and/or still/clearness)
5) record the states of matter observed in each bottle after 15 minutes
what was observed
HEW tablet: rapidly dissolved in lots of bubbles with cloudiness initially, as time went on the bubbling slowed and the cloudiness reduced
no tablet: entirely still and clear
chemistry behind what happened
HEW tablet water bottle ended in a solid state due to the residue from the Mg tablet, liquid state from the water, and gaseous state from the molecular hydrogen gas
the water bottle with no tablet remained a liquid state from the water and a gaseous state from the air
to form HEW the Mg metal reacts with an acid which donates H+ to form H2 which is dissolved in the water
