Series Elements
Circuit components that carry the exact same current because they are connected sequentially, providing only one path for the current to take.
Equivalent Resistance
A single total resistance value that replaces a network of resistors; for resistors connected in series, it is calculated by adding their individual values together.
Voltage Divider Rule
A formula used in single loop circuits to calculate the voltage across a specific resistor Ri using the expression VRi=ReqRi×VS, where voltage is directly proportional to resistance.
Passive Sign Convention
A standard convention in circuit analysis where the relative directions of voltage and current determine whether a element absorbs positive or negative power.
Single Loop Circuit
A circuit configuration containing a single closed path where all components share one common current flowing either clockwise or counterclockwise.
Monotonicity
A property of a function indicating that it is strictly either increasing or decreasing across its domain.
Even Function
A function that satisfies f(−x)=f(x), meaning substituting −x for x yields the original function; visually symmetric around the y-axis.
Odd Function
A function that satisfies f(−x)=−f(x), meaning substituting −x for x negates the original function; visually symmetric around the origin (0,0).
Increasing Function
A function where the output value y increases as the input value x increases from left to right along the x-axis.
Decreasing Function
A function where the output value y decreases as the input value x increases from left to right along the x-axis.
