Upright position
The initial dental chair position from which all further adjustments are made.
Almost supine position
A patient position where the head, knees, and feet are at approximately the same level; the head should not be lower than the feet except during a syncopal attack.
Clock concept
An imaginary clock face placed over the dental chair with the patient's head at the center and top of the circle at 12 o'clock, used to designate operating positions and working zones.
Right front position (7 o'clock)
An operator position used for working on mandibular anterior, maxillary anterior, and mandibular right posterior teeth, where the patient's head may be turned toward the operator.
Right position (9 o'clock)
An operator position located directly to the right of the patient, used for the facial surfaces of right posterior teeth and occlusal surfaces of mandibular right posterior teeth.
Right rear position (11 o'clock)
The position of choice for most dental operations, where the operator sits behind and slightly to the right of the patient with the left arm positioned around the patient's head.
Direct rear position (12 o'clock)
An operator position directly behind the patient looking down over the patient's head, used primarily for operating on the lingual surfaces of mandibular anterior teeth.
Left-handed operator positions
The four standard working positions for a left-handed operator, comprising Left front (5 o'clock), Left (3 o'clock), Left rear (1 o'clock), and Direct rear (12 o'clock).
Operator ergonomic posture
A sitting position using the entire stool seat cushion with a straight or slightly forward spine supported by the backrest, thighs parallel to the floor, lower legs perpendicular to the floor, and feet flat on the floor.
Assistant stool height
The seated position for the assistant, which is kept 4 to 6 inches higher than the operator stool to ensure maximal visual access.
Operating working height rule
The ergonomic guideline stating that the teeth being treated should be adjusted to the same level as the operator's elbow.
Maxillary arch operating position
The patient orientation where the maxillary occlusal surfaces are positioned approximately perpendicular to the floor.
Mandibular arch operating position
The patient orientation where the mandibular occlusal surfaces are positioned at approximately 45^\bar{\text{o}} (45 degrees) to the floor.
Operator's zone
The working zone located between 7 o'clock and 12 o'clock for a right-handed clinician.
Assistant's zone
The working zone located between 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock.
Static zone
A non-traffic working area located between 11 o'clock and 2 o'clock (or 12 and 2 o'clock) where heavy, dangerous, or specialized equipment and supplies are placed.
Transfer zone
The area located between 4 o'clock and 7 o'clock below the patient's chin and above the chest where all instrument exchanges take place.
Instrument exchange protocol
The process of transferring dental tools using minimal motion (fingers, wrist, elbow) with instruments arranged from left to right in sequence of use.
Dental headlamps
Light sources aligned parallel to the clinician's line of vision that eliminate shadows within the operating field.
Magnification loupes
Optical magnification devices that increase field visibility, assist delicate procedures, maintain a fixed working distance, and protect eyes from splash or mechanical injury.

Operator access zones and patient head tilt
Method of accessing specific dental quadrants by combining operator positions (8 o'clock, 11 o'clock, and 12 to 1 o'clock) with tilting the patient's head to the right, left, or back.
