Anatomical Position
Standing erect, heels together, arms at side with palms anterior and thumbs lateral.
LRQ (Lower Right Quadrant)
Abdominal quadrant containing the appendix and cecum.
URQ (Upper Right Quadrant)
Abdominal quadrant containing the liver, gallbladder, and duodenum.
ULQ (Upper Left Quadrant)
Abdominal quadrant containing the stomach, pancreas, and spleen.
LLQ (Lower Left Quadrant)
Abdominal quadrant containing the descending and sigmoid colon.
Median (Midsagittal) Plane
A section down the midline.
Parasagittal Plane
A section not on the midline, but still parallel to the assumed midline of the body (e.g., CT scans).
Frontal (Coronal) Plane
A section from side to side that divides the ventral & dorsal surfaces.
Horizontal (Transverse) Plane
A cross-sectional section front to back horizontally.
Pelvic Cavity
Ventral body cavity that holds urogenital organs.
Serous Membranes
Membranes consisting of an outer parietal layer and an inner visceral layer with serous fluid between them to allow for almost frictionless movements of organs.
Integumentary System
Organ system consisting of skin, dermis, and glands that functions in regulation and protection to prevent water loss.
Skeletal System
Organ system consisting of bones, cartilages, ligaments, and tendons that provides protection, support, and blood cell production.
Muscular System
Organ system consisting of muscles attached to bones that allows for movements, posture, and generates heat.
Nervous System
Organ system consisting of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors that regulates and coordinates sensation and movement.
Endocrine System
Organ system consisting of the pituitary, thymus, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pineal, ovaries, testes, and pancreas that functions in regulation and maintenance of growth, metabolism, etc.
Cardiovascular System
Organ system consisting of the heart, blood vessels, and blood that functions in transport of nutrients and waste, as well as immune function.
Lymphatic System
Organ system consisting of vessels, nodes, spleen, thymus, tonsils, and lymph tissue that functions in immune response, circulatory functions, and fat absorption.
Respiratory System
Organ system consisting of nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, lungs, and bronchi that functions in O2 and CO2 exchange.
Digestive System
Organ system consisting of mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas that functions in mechanical and chemical breakdown of ingested foods and absorption.
Urinary System
Organ system consisting of kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra that functions in waste removal, regulating pH, and water balance.
Reproductive Systems
Organ systems consisting of male (testes, prostate, scrotum, penis, duct system) and female (ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, mammary glands, vagina) components that produce sex cells and sex hormones.
