Editing Bin
A folder inside your editing program used to organize files such as video, audio, and graphics.
Linear Editing
Editing in a strictly sequential order; cannot jump around during the editing process.
Non-Linear Editing
Editing that allows you to edit in any order, commonly associated with modern editing software like Premiere Pro.
Codec
A method for compressing and storing video files; for example, H.264.
Narration vs Picture
The process of editing narration first, then matching video clips to the narration.
Audio Levels
Dialogue should peak around -12 dB to -6 dB, avoiding reaching 0 dB.
IN/OUT
IN is the start point of a clip; OUT is the end point of a clip.
Overwrite
Editing method that covers the existing content on the timeline.
Insert
Editing method that pushes existing clips to the right to create space for a new clip.
Fade In/Out (Video)
Using opacity keyframes to fade video to or from black.
Fade In/Out (Audio)
Using audio keyframes to gradually increase or decrease audio volume.
Razor Tool
A tool that cuts a clip into separate pieces.
Select Tool
The default tool used for moving, selecting, and adjusting clips.
Pen Tool
A tool used to add keyframes for audio volume or video opacity changes.
Text Tool
A tool used to add titles, captions, and graphics to a project.
High Key Lighting
Bright, even lighting with soft shadows, commonly used in happy scenes.
Low Key Lighting
Dark, dramatic lighting characterized by strong shadows and high contrast.
3-Point Lighting
A lighting setup that includes a Key Light, Fill Light, and Backlight around the subject.
PA (Production Assistant)
An entry-level job that assists the crew with setup, gear, and tasks.
Anchor
An on-camera news presenter.
Floor Manager
A person responsible for giving cues to talent and communicating with the control room.
Writer
A person who creates scripts, news stories, and shot lists.
Stages of Production
The three phases are Pre-Production (planning), Production (filming), and Post-Production (editing).
