Vital Capacity (VC)
The maximum amount of air that can be exhaled after a maximum inhalation.
Tidal Volume (TV)
The amount of air that is inhaled or exhaled during normal breathing.
Residual Volume (RV)
The amount of air remaining in the lungs after a forced exhalation.
Total Lung Capacity (TLC)
The total amount of air in the lungs after maximum inhalation.
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)
The maximum amount of air that can be inhaled after a normal inhalation.
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV)
The maximum amount of air that can be exhaled after a normal exhalation.
Spirometer
An instrument used to measure lung volumes and capacities.
Epiglottis
A flap that prevents food from entering the trachea during swallowing.
Cricoid Cartilage
A ring-shaped cartilaginous structure located below the thyroid cartilage in the larynx.
Thyroid Cartilage
The largest cartilage of the larynx, commonly known as the Adam's apple.
Urinalysis
A test that examines the physical and chemical composition of urine.
Meiosis
A type of cell division that reduces the chromosome number by half, producing gametes.
Spermatogenesis
The process by which male gametes, or spermatozoa, are produced.
Oogenesis
The process by which female gametes, or ova, are produced.
Genotype
The genetic constitution of an individual organism.
Phenotype
The observable physical or biochemical characteristics of an organism.
Deglutition
The process of swallowing.
Chemical Digestion
The breakdown of food through enzymatic action.
Mechanical Digestion
The physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces.
Alimentary Canal
The whole passage along which food passes through the body, from mouth to anus.
Glomerulus
A cluster of capillaries in the kidney that filters blood.
Nephron
The functional unit of the kidney responsible for urine formation.
Fertilization
The union of sperm and egg to form a zygote.
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
A hormone that triggers ovulation and stimulates testosterone production in males.
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
A hormone that regulates the development of gametes in both males and females.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
A waste product of metabolism that affects blood pH and breathing rate.
Specific Gravity
A measure of the concentration of solutes in urine.
Auscultation
The action of listening to the sounds made by internal organs, typically using a stethoscope.
