What are the two types of bone tissue?
cortical bone and trabecular bone tissue
what is cortical bone tissue?
it is the compact and dense hard outer layer of the bone that mainly forms the diaphysis of long bones. it is able to withstand high compressive forces due to its density
what is trabecular bone tissue?
also known as spongey bone that has many open spaces. the term “trabecular’ means ‘long thin pieces of tissue’. it is very lightweight and is found withing the epiphysis of bones as it is great at adapting to lines of stress
where is bone marrow found?
it is found inside bones typically within the diaphysis (shaft) of bones
what is bone marrow?
it is considered a primary lymphoid organ
what is the relationship between bone marrow and our blood cells?
our red blood cells and lymphocytes (erythrocytes) develop in red bone marrow which in adults can be found in the epiphysis of long bones and in many flat bones of the axial skeleton
what are the two types of bone marrow?
red and yellow bone marrow
