Self-Talk
The internal conversations we have with ourselves; the voice in our head that comments on our experiences, actions, and thoughts.
Inner Speech
Similar to self-talk, refers to the verbal thoughts that occur within our minds; our internal monologue.
Inner Dialogue
The back-and-forth conversation we have with ourselves in our minds, often involving different perspectives or voices
Filtering
Focusing exclusively on negative details while ignoring positive aspects of a situation
Catastrophizing
Assuming the worst possible outcome will happen; magnifying negative events out of proportion
Personalizing
Taking excessive personal responsibility for external events; believing everything is your fault or directed at you
Polarizing
Seeing things in black-and-white terms; all-or-nothing thinking with no middle ground
Rehashing
Repeatedly going over past events, often with a negative focus; ruminating on what went wrong
Rehearsing
Mentally practicing future scenarios, often with anxiety about potential negative outcomes
Blaming
Attributing fault entirely to yourself or others without considering multiple factors
Venting
Expressing negative emotions repetitively without moving toward resolution or problem-solving
Fixed Mindset
The belief that abilities and traits are static and unchangeable; challenges are threats to be avoided
Growth Mindset
The belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work; challenges are opportunities to learn
Resiliency
The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; mental toughness and adaptability to stress
Lovingkindness Meditation (LKM)
A meditation practice focused on developing feelings of goodwill, kindness, and warmth toward others and oneself
Metta
the Pali word for lovingkindness; a Buddhist practice of cultivating unconditional love and compassion.
Metacommunication
Communication about communication; awareness and discussion of patterns in how we talk to ourselves.
Mindfulness
A mental practice that involves focusing one's awareness on the present moment, accepting thoughts and feelings without judgment.
Spot The Success
A practice of intentionally noticing and acknowledging achievements and positive actions, no matter how small
Appraisals
How we evaluate and assign meaning to situations and events
Reappraisals
The process of changing how we think about situations to alter their emotional impact
Gratitude Lists
The practice of recording things one is thankful for to cultivate appreciation and positive focus.
Meditation
Various practices of focused attention that train awareness and achieve mental clarity.
Fail Forward
The approach of viewing failures as learning opportunities that propel growth rather than setbacks
Leapfrogging
Shifting focus from problems to solutions; jumping ahead to constructive action rather than dwelling on difficulties. Do action (VS procrastinate) + you’ll feel better
Mantras
Repeated words or phrases used to aid concentration in meditation or to provide encouragement
Affirmations
Positive statements repeated to oneself to challenge negative thoughts and reinforce positive beliefs
Self-Compassion
Extending kindness and understanding to oneself during instances of perceived inadequacy or failure
Default Mode Network (DMN)
Brain network active when the mind is wandering or engaged in self-referential thinking; often involved in rumination
Task Positive Network (TPN)
Brain network active during goal-directed activities and focused attention; counterbalances the DMN.
Self-criticism
Harsh judgmental thoughts directed toward oneself; often characterized by shame and guilt
Negativity Bias
The tendency to register, dwell on, and be more impacted by negative experiences than positive ones
Opposite Thought
A technique of deliberately generating a thought that directly contradicts a negative or unhelpful thought pattern.
