Acculturation
50/50 assimilation where a minority group retains some traditions and language.
Assimilation
Minority culture forgoes culture for majority culture.
Cultural Appropriation
Majority takes traits from minority (usually supporting racial/ethnic stereotypes).
Cultural Convergence
When two cultures come together.
Cultural Divergence
When two cultures separate (become more diff. overtime).
Cultural Landscape
Modification of environment by a group and a visible reflection of group's cultural beliefs and values.
Cultural Relativism
One person's Culture Should be understood From the perspective of that culture.
Ethnic Culture
Beliefs, values, Customs of a Specific group.
Ethnocentrism
The belief that one's Culture is superior to another's Culture.
Expansion Diffusion
The spread of Cultural traits outward through exchange without migration.
Indigenous Culture
The culture of the native people slow to change (traditional).
Multiculturalism
Coexistance of multiple ethnic groups in a place/city.
Sequent Occupance
Groups moving in and out of places and leaving Cultural traces/ imprints on the landscape.
Syncretism
The blending of Cultures to create new culture.
Taboos
Behaviors heavily discouraged by a culture.
Folk Culture
The beliefs and practices of small homogenas Groups of people, often livingin rural areas, that are relatively isolated and slow to change.
Popular/Global Culture
When cultural traits (ex. clothing, music, etc) spread quickly over a large area and are adopted by various groups.
Material Culture
Artifacts/ tangible things those that can be experienced by the senses.
Mentifacts
Nonmaterial culture/ intangible concepts ex) beliefs, values, practices, and aesthetics.
Sociofacts
The way people organize their Society and relate to one another. ex) family structure, govt, education.
Ethnic Enclave
Clusters of people of the same Culture in an area / neighborhood.
Neolocalism
The process of re-embracing the uniqueness and authenticity of a place.
Placenessless
When a place loses its uniqueness and distinctiveness.
Globalization
Actions or processes that involve the entire world or result in making something worldwide in scope.
Local Culture
The specific culture of an area (trad. Culture is always this ).
