Thin, Slipper, stretches to about 6cm, and is clear to aid in the transport of sperm into the cervix.

What factors affect Cervical mucous?

Antihistamines, vaginal infections, contraceptive foams or jellies, sexual arousal, recent coitus (sex)

When does ovulation usually occur for someone with regular cycles<

14 days before menstruation

When is a female fertile?

5 days before and 1 day after ovulation

What are forms of permanent contraceptives?

Male sterilization (vasectomy), Female sterilization (Tubal, Hysteroscopic)

Education regarding vasectomy/

• BC for 1-3 months and must return to do sperm count testing.

• Takes 20 minutes to perform and is outpatient based.

• Analgesics, ice pack, and rest for pain

what do hormonal contraceptives do

• prevent ovulation

• Make the uterine endometrium less hospitable if a fertilized ovum does arrive

• Make cervical mucus thick and resistant to sperm penetration

Side effects of oc

• Breast tenderness

• nausea

• headache

• weight gain

• amenorrhea

S/S Herpes and TX

• Cluster of vesicles that are painful

can cause spontaneous abortion, active infection necessitates c section, causes neonatal CNS problems

No cure exists, acyclovir and valacyclovir reduces symptoms

Trichomoniasis S/S and TX

Thin, foul smelling greenish yellow discharge

itching, edema, redness

TX: metronidazole (not in first tri)

Clotrimazole (used in first trI)

Does not cross placenta

Chlamydia S/S and TX

• Yellow discharge

• Painful urination

• Asymptomatic in females which delays tx

TX - Azithromycin, doxycycline, erythromycin in pregnancy

Transmitted via birth canal causes conjuctivitis and pneumonia in newborn

Gonorrhea S/S and TX

Purulent discharge, painful urination

transmitted to Newborns eyes during birth causing blindness

Tx- azithromycin and ceftriaxone

can result in PID

Syphilis

3 stages

1- painless bumps

2- 2 months later, enlarged liver and spleen

3 -many years later causes heart and blood diseases

Transmitted across placenta

HPV

• dry wart like growths

• cervical cancer can result

• cryotherapy

• Higher risk of cervical cancer
