Middle Childhood and Adolescence
The period of development spanning roughly ages 8 to 20.
Adrenarche
Early maturation of the adrenal glands, triggering production of androgens.
Pubarche
The appearance of pubic hair.
Menarche
The first occurrence of menstruation.
Spermarche
The beginning of sperm production in boys.
Androgens
Male sex hormones, such as testosterone.
Hypothalamus
A region of the forebrain that controls hormone release.
Marked Physical Changes-Female
Include pubic hair, breasts, labia, clitoris, widening of hips, body fat, apocrine sweat glands, and height changes.
Marked Physical Changes-Male
Include apocrine sweat glands, pubic hair, facial hair, penis, testes, musculature, skeletal changes, height changes and voice changes.
Behavioral Changes - Male
Increased production of testosterone and aggression.
Behavioral Changes - Female
Increased production of estrogen and emotions.
Adolescent Sexual Behaviors
Includes virginity and social expectations.
Extended Adolescence
The period between puberty and society's acceptable marriage age, has increased significantly.
