Solar System
The Sun and all the bodies that orbit it, including planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and interplanetary matter.
Terrestrial Planets
The four inner planets of the Solar System: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, characterized by rocky surfaces.
Jovian Planets
The four outer planets of the Solar System: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, characterized by gaseous compositions.
Dwarf Planet
A celestial body that orbits the Sun, has enough mass to assume a nearly round shape, has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and is not a moon.
Kuiper Belt
A region of the Solar System beyond Neptune's orbit, populated with many small icy bodies.
Oort Cloud
A theoretical cloud of predominantly icy objects that is believed to exist in the outermost reaches of the Solar System.
Asteroid Belt
A region located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter that contains a large number of asteroids.
Orbital Period
The time it takes for a celestial body to make one complete orbit around the Sun.
Semi-Major Axis
The longest radius of an ellipse, measuring the distance from the center to the furthest edge of the orbit.
Eccentricity
A measure of how much an orbit deviates from being circular.
Perihelion
The point in an orbit where a celestial body is closest to the Sun.
Aphelion
The point in an orbit where a celestial body is farthest from the Sun.
Hydrostatic Equilibrium
A state in which an object's self-gravity balances against its internal pressure, allowing it to maintain a nearly round shape.
Planet
A celestial body that orbits the Sun, is nearly round in shape due to self-gravity, and has cleared its orbital neighborhood.
Galileo
An early astronomer known for his improvements to the telescope and for his astronomical observations in the 1600s.
Angular Momentum
The quantity of rotation of an object, which is conserved during the formation of the Solar System.
Centripetal Force
The force required to make an object follow a circular path, crucial for the flat, disc-shaped formation of the Solar System.
Retrograde Rotation
The spin of a planet in the opposite direction to the spin of most planets in the Solar System.
Mercury

The process by which a planet becomes internally layered due to the settling of materials based on density.
Geological Activity
Processes that occur within a planet due to internal heat, leading to volcanic and tectonic activity.
Extraterrestrial Life
Life that may exist or may have existed beyond Earth, not yet confirmed.
Solar Flare
A sudden eruption of energy on the Sun's surface, releasing a large amount of radiation.
Magnetic Field
