Metallic Bonding
The chemical bonding that results from the attraction between metal atoms and the surrounding sea of electrons.
Electron-Sea Model
A model that describes metallic bonding as a sea of delocalized electrons surrounding metal cations.
Malleability
The ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into thin sheets.
Ductility
The ability of a substance to be drawn, pulled, or extruded through a small opening to produce a wire.
Electrical Conductivity
A property of metals that allows them to conduct electricity due to the mobility of electrons.
Thermal Conductivity
A property of metals that enables them to conduct heat effectively.
Delocalized Electrons
Electrons that are not associated with a single atom, but can move freely within the metallic structure.
Luster
The shiny appearance of metal surfaces due to their ability to reflect light.
Enthalpy of Vaporization
The amount of energy absorbed as heat when a specified amount of a substance vaporizes at constant pressure.
Crystal Lattice
A structure that represents the arrangement of atoms in a solid, including metals, in a fixed geometric pattern.
