Internet of Things (IoT)
A network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment.
M2M (Machine to Machine)
Refers to communications and interactions between machines and devices, often through a cloud infrastructure.
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
A technology that uses radio waves to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects.
Sensor
A device that detects changes in physical properties and forwards or processes this information.
Transducer
A device that converts energy from one form to another.
Actuator
A component of a machine that moves or controls a mechanism or system, requiring a control signal and a source of energy.
Analog Sensor
Produces a continuous output signal that is generally proportional to the quantity being measured.
Digital Sensor
Produces discrete digital output signals that represent the quantity being measured.
Scalar Sensor
Produces output proportional to the magnitude of the quantity being measured.
Vector Sensor
Produces output proportional to the magnitude, direction, and orientation of the quantity being measured.
