What happened on the 3rd October 1918 and why?

  • Prince Max asks for an armistice to end fighting and enforce peace within Germany ( and he knows he is close top losing war)

What was the ‘Revolution from above?’

  • Enforced by Prince Max to the Kaiser to have a constitutional monarchy as the military felt a civilian gov would attract a peace treaty from the ‘victorious allies’

  • Prince Max also always all men to have the vote and allow the government to control the army and not the kaiser

Why did the revolution from above fail?

  • Spartactist were looking to Russia as they had just had a communist revolution

  • Kaiser refuses to abdicate despite unpopularity (eventually does anyway)

  • By the 8th November 1918 Bavaria declares itself as a republic

  • FORCED Kaiser to abdicate and Prince Max to resign

What was the sparacists revolt ? Why ?

  • A left - wing uprising to establish a communist state in Germany and overthrow the Weimar Republic lead by the Spartacists League

  • Following this a general strike was declared on the 6th Jan and 10,000+ people joined

  • Women are allowed the vote !

  • Voting age reduced from 25 to 21

  • Proportional Representation

  • Federal government system allowed a dispursion of power due to the land 18 which made the laws
